# How to edit a PDF for free

> Every way to edit a PDF for free: add text, white out mistakes, highlight, add images, redact, or convert to Word for big changes. On phone or computer.

PDFs are designed to look the same everywhere, which is why they're awkward to change. The right method depends on how much you need to change.

## Small changes: add, cover and mark up
For a name, a date, a corrected number or a note, use an editor that works on top of the page. In Edit PDF:

- Open your PDF.

- Choose Text and click where the words should go, then type.

- Choose White-out and drag over anything you want to hide — then type the replacement on top.

- Use Highlight, Box or Draw to mark things up, and Image to add a logo, photo or stamp.

- Click Save PDF.

Nothing is uploaded: the editing happens in your browser, so it's safe for contracts and ID documents.

## Big changes: rewrite the content
If you need to rewrite paragraphs, reflow pages or change tables, an overlay editor isn't the right tool. Convert the PDF to Word, edit it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or WPS Office, and use File → Save as / Download → PDF when you're done.

## Page-level changes

- Delete pages: Remove pages

- Reorder or rotate: Organize PDF, Rotate PDF

- Add pages from another file: Merge PDF

- Sign: Sign PDF

## Hiding private information
A white or black box only covers text — it may still be in the file. To remove it for good, use Redact PDF, which flattens the pages after you cover them.

## FAQ

### Can I edit a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. For adding text, white-out, highlights, images and signatures, a browser tool is enough. For rewriting text, converting to Word works with free word processors.

### Why can't I click into the existing text and change it?
Inside a PDF, text is stored as individual words and letters placed at exact positions, not as flowing paragraphs, so changing one word doesn't move the rest. That's why covering and retyping, or converting to Word, are the practical options.
